What Was I So Afraid Of?
I’m doing it. Finally! I’m taking the time to write a blog. Before you roll your eyes and say, “so what? Everyone writes a blog these days,” let me explain why I was so hesitant to do it.
This is a big step for me. It’s like that one time where that one-testicled bicycling saxophone player hopped onto the moon. I think his name was Buzz Lightyear or something. I’m not too caught up in the specifics. But anyways, this is a big thing for me because all my life I’ve been a private person. I’ve been told multiple times how “hard I am to read” (a sad quote considering I am a fiction novelist) or how I “never open up.” While I don’t do it on purpose, it is true. Do I have an anxiety disorder? No. I just like talking about certain things but have never had a problem opening up to anyone on just about any subject. It’s not about how the question is asked but what the question is.
So, here I am. Starting a blog. By now, you’ve probably said to yourself that how private and revealing your blog gets all depends on what the blog is about. That’s true to a certain extent. But think of it this way too: in today’s society we have our entire lives out on the internet for just about everyone to see. For some of us that includes our naked bodies. We have our employment history on LinkedIn, our personal timeline of events on Facebook, our procrastinating-at-work-or-school finds on StumbleUpon, our “wish-list”-of-things-we-want-to-do-if-we-had-the-time porn on Pinterest and our own personal porn somewhere in the cloud—not that everyone takes nude pictures... but a lot of you know you do. There’s so much information that it can seem like an overload. Add in Twitter and a blog and now people have your every thought almost every day of every week. It makes me wonder about what happens when we meet someone in real life after following them, liking them, poking them and RSSing to their feeds what the heck do we talk about? You already know everything about them, right? Honestly, I don’t have that many thoughts a day that would still allow me to be interesting if you met me on the street.
I don’t have much of that stuff. I’m not on Facebook, haven’t updated my LinkedIn in years, don’t use the cloud (sorry ladies, but you won’t be seeing this gelatinously chiseled body naked anytime soon), never befriended Tom on Myspace and have only a toe-dipping fascination with Twitter. I do have a Pinterest account and will start using it more often. I also have a Goodreads account you can check out on the side an author’s bio on Amazon you can visit (also on the side) and check out my books. But that’s about it for now.
What, then, will this blog be about? Well, as I mentioned before I am a novelist and while I will promote my own books from time to time, I want to talk about the thing that engulfs my life the most: entertainment. This blog will be a place where I talk about the TV shows, movies, books and food I like. Wait, food? Yes. Maybe once every two weeks I’ll post a recipe for a dish that I think might interest you lovely readers out there. The recipe will be either for dinner party entertaining purposes or just for good family eating. Hey, we all like to have something to chew on when indulging in our favorite book, movie, or TV show, especially you binge-watchers out there! Also, I’ll probably do a slightly off topic opinion piece (though everything’s an opinion) about something that has stood out to me in the recent days. It’ll probably be on the writing process but could range in topic anywhere from my summertime gardening efforts, to the weather, to what motivates me.
Keep in mind that I can’t write on everything that comes out when it comes out and I do have my own novels I’ll be working on consistently while blogging but I’ll try to stay up-to-date on most of the things I’m writing, watching, reading and cooking. Stay tuned for the first post. Until then, stay groovy!
P.S. Oh! That was a terrible sign-off. I never use the word groovy. Jiminy crickets! Why would I say that. I’ll work on that. Check my other pages down below.
