Am I Captivated by the Red Devils? Uh... well #ScreamQueens #3WeekRoundUp #PremiereWeek #FOX

Oh boy. Scream Queens. Fox’s Scream Queens (#ScreamQueens) is... quite the show. Honestly, I don’t really know where the heck to begin with this. There is so much right and wrong with this show that it’s hard to piece out the difference between either. It both appears as a complete mess at times while also knowing what it is doing. Its brand of satire of the horror genre can sometimes be right on while at other times drifts into a far too over-the-top melodrama that even Liberace or Lady Gaga or Bjork or any other outlandishly dressed musical artist would sit back and go, “whoa! Too much.” But before I begin deconstructing the show, let’s back track a little and breakdown what to expect in this review/recap.

As was stated in a previous post, this will be a three week round up post (the same goes for all new shows). Why? Because I believe in giving a show three episodes to prove itself and decide whether I’ll continue with it or not. Since Scream Queens as well as Heroes Reborn gave us a two-hour season premiere, they have already covered three episodes of the series come the end of this week. I’ll go more into depth on why I have this three week rule in a later post but for now just know that I don’t think most people can adequately judge something in just one episode, as a TV series (or my episodic novella series) is meant to change over time. With that in mind, writing a series off that you were initially interested in after just one episode can be foolish as plenty of things start slow.

Now that that business is out of the way, back to Scream Queens. My initial excitement for this show was based on the fact that this came from the same creator of American Horror Story and Nip/Tuck and that it would be a comedy (for a recap of that click #PremiereWeek to go back to that article). Comedy it is. A little too silly? Definitely.

The story follows a brand new year at a university that still allows for Sororities and Fraternities. The best and most popular sorority on campus is the KKT (because the KKK would have been too obvious? Not likely for this show, but OK). The president of the KKT happens to be a young white girl by the name of Chanel played by Emma Roberts. So self-obsessed and cartoonish in her ego this girl is that she has no time or just lacks the brain cells to remember and call her fellow sisters by their proper names, instead naming them Chanel numbers 2-5 (as if that perfume needed any more free advertising). Far too into the worship culture of Chanel, the only thing missing from these other girls (one of which left before the season began) is the yellow Minion color and strange goggles. I’m surprised they can even speak English rather than having formulated their own language of Kissass-ese or some other gobblety-gook. Two of these girls are recognizable as Ariana Grande and Abigail Breslin (Chanel no. 5 and the first suspect due to her name alone). Ariana’s time as a TV star is short-lived as she tweets about her death in the first episode but I’m getting ahead of myself.

Jamie Lee Curtis as the dean of the college, she concludes that KKT reflects poorly on college culture and the university as a whole. This comes after an accident last year when Chanel was a prime suspect in loading a spray tan machine with acid, which then sprayed down the president of KKT at that time. Now that Chanel has moseyed her way into such a position, the dean makes a decree that any and all people wanting to join KKT must be permitted to do so—this only after a meeting with a past sorority sister serving as the lawyer for that branch who is stuck in the 90s for whatever reason. That’s what’s going on all in episode one to set up the future shenanigans on the actual college side.

As for the would-be sisters, we have Grace—a legacy whose overprotective father actually comes to teach at the college after the murders start. Her mother apparently died a long while ago but her father regaled her with stories about how much the woman loved being a KKT sister and the celebration of womanhood and blah blah blah! Naturally, she wants to follow in her deceased mother’s footsteps. Her initial roommate, played by Keke Palmer (excuse me as some people I know by their character’s name and others just by their real name) is the only black girl to pledge and really doesn’t want to do it save for it looking good on a resume one day as she has lofty aspirations.

Filling out the trifecta of pledges that matter is Lea Michele’s character or neck brace girl named so because... well, it’s obvious. Outside of her over-creepy nerd knowledge about death, she calls Chanel mom in some strange idolatry fetishism that I’m partially convinced the show made up (apparently young girls without female figures in their lives call a girl near the same age that they admire and look up to their mom? What?). There’s a few other pledges—deaf Taylor Swift (she gets her head run over by a lawnmower toward the end of the second episode), other strange nerd girl and Asian lesbian chick but they’re really there just to fill out the cast and to raise the body count before getting rid of characters you really love. They all move into the house just as the murders start.

Surprisingly, the first real murder comes when Chanel dips their house maid’s (since when do sororities have maids? Don’t they make the pledges do all the gruntwork?), White Mamie (yeah, you read that right. And as the most awkward and cringe-laugh-inducing scenes in the opening minutes of the show tell you, she also don’t know nothin’ ‘bout birthin’ no babies) into a deep fryer that was on in the sorority house kitchen (since when does a sorority have a deep fryer? Aren’t the girls always looking out for their weight? I’ve seen those recruitment videos online and not a single girl is over 150, tops). Instead of calling the police, all the girls go along with throwing her body into the freezer from where she subsequently disappears. This, in turn, bonds the girls in secret which also leads to Ariana Grande’s death as she tweets and a hazing situation where all the pledges are buried up to their heads in soil in the backyard and the red devil—the school mascot—runs over the deaf girl’s head on a riding mower. Ka-boom! We got a murder mystery on our hands.

So, outside of the fact that Chanel has a typical douche, jock, frathouse boyfriend with grades so bad he has
to sleep with the dean to stay in school—her choice, though he thinks he’s madly in love with her—the only
other suspect in the first episode is his gay best friend played by Nick Jonas. Yes, that Nick Jonas... from the Jonas Brothers and now with his own solo career. In a completely expected twist akin to Scream, it’s revealed at the end of the second episode that not only did Nick fake his death in his own frat but that he is most certainly one of the two killers stalking the campus. Yes, two killers because murder is only fun if you have a partner. It’s like Scattergory or sex. Side note: I predict with the ridiculousness of this show that there will end up actually being three to five killers.

Because the murder happened solely on KKT property the dean declares that they need to have extra protection, ending them up with Niecy Nash as the security guard in her Reno 9-1-1 callback days. She is hilarious for what she brings and as the Deputy Dewey of the show she gets an old friend killed and manages to accuse the only other black character of being the murderer as only good cops would do, right? Right (Eyeroll, sigh, double sigh!)?

To top it all off there’s a secondary mystery about the death of a sorority sister from twenty years earlier who died during a house party in which she gave birth in an upstairs bathroom and supposedly bled to death. Though her sisters knew of this birth, she died anyway because they had to go dance to TLC’s Waterfalls, which, to be fair that was also my Jimmy-jam back in the day. Hey, sometimes we all need to just listen to the rivers and the lakes like we used to. Not to move to fast away from this second mystery, the girls, along with the help of White Mamie (damn, she was working for them way back then too?) and the dean (not the dean at the time) covered it up somehow and made the young girl disappear. The mystery remains.

Coffee Shop Creeper/Reporter

Because of this continuing question mark, Grace and her new non-boyfriend boyfriend who stalked Chanel the previous year (they probably had a thing before she became uber-popular) is investigating this along with the murders as he considers himself a future journalist/current school newspaper editor... and part-time mascot. Whaaaaaa..! That’s right, he has a red devils costume, but is he the killer?

In my estimation, no. In fact, along with Nick Jonas, I think the person most likely to be the killer is Grace’s overprotective father, played by Oliver Hudson who had a steady gig on Nashville last year and a little father drama of his own over the summer. Why? Because I think either the dead girl from 20 years ago or the second girl who took the dead girl’s baby has something to do with him: Grace’s mother (making the baby grace), a good friend of his, or maybe his sister, etc. I also think Nick Jonas’ character is somehow related to Grace (maybe older brother) and is doing the killings for the hell of it/father-son bonding. Crazy, but right up this show’s alley.

So, my diagnosis of this show? Meh! I rate it around a C or C+ at the moment. While it hits its mark on many things including the actual mystery, well-defined characters and plenty of blood-lust, I think the exaggerated slapstick-ish humor of the show can wear on the viewer over the season. Even for an audience much younger than, say, the AHS crowd, this seems like it could get old fast (probably why this is only a short run 13-episode season). Emma is great at playing the “B” as she has been for the past few years (I’d like to see her stretch and play a nice girl again even in just one thing), Niecy Nash is Niecy Nash,
Keke Palmer has a little too much sister-girl going on (a hyper-attitude that some young girls give off reminiscent of the movie BAPS and falls into the stereotypical black sidekick role), Abigail Breslin and the others haven’t had their proper time to shine yet (it’s only the third episode) and Jamie Lee Curtis feels partially wasted here. Honestly, I would have preferred she do a role on AHS first, maybe fill in the vacancy left by Jessica Lange as the horror godmother of sorts, but I understand how she seems to only want to do comedy nowadays. Will I keep watching? Probably, but this might be a DVR spacer—a show I leave on the DVR for a really long time until I get enough free time to binge nearly the entire season and then be done with it. Should you watch if you haven’t been doing so already? Not if you want real horror or don’t find teenage and young adult drama/comedy funny. If, however, you enjoy things similar to Evil Dead 2 and Dale and Tucker vs. Evil, and can stand a lot of humor in your horror. This is right up your alley.

What do you think? Am I being too harsh on this show? Is it only average or do you drop everything to watch it because it’s your jam, jelly, and secret sauce? Or are you patiently waiting for American Horror Story to come back October 7th? And what about the mystery for those that do enjoy it? Who do you think the killers are? Let me know what you think in the comments below. Scream Queens airs Tuesdays at 9pm eastern only on FOX.

#FreeLucious, Chris Rock is a Bad Guy, Kill Him and Make it Loud and Make It Long and If You Don’t, I’m Tellin’ Momma #Empire #EmpireSeason2 #PremiereWeek

Whoa! So. Much. Drama! Empire returned for its season two premiere tonight, bringing more drama than your high school theatre teacher. More drama than that one time you took your cousin’s favorite toy from him because you thought it was going to be a hilarious joke and he ended up breaking your favorite CD/mixtape of romance songs, and you were the one that ended up crying. You know you loved them songs. Your first crush made that tape for you. Now you’re all in your feelings talkin’ about how he overreacted. Yeah, it was that intense.

First off, as if the night couldn’t get any more racially-charged with Black-ish doing their thing over on ABC, these fools right here had Cookie hopping around in a cage dressed in a gorilla costume. I just almost lost everything. They’re lowering her down onto a summer jam-esque stage so she can make some BS speech about how they need to free Lucious because he didn’t kill this guy she knows he clearly did. After that, they ran through a string of cameos that showed everybody from old, crusty Pimp Reverend Al Sharpton and his graying slick-back to a meatier-looking Don Lemon who took time away from his busy schedule of being yelled at in the streets by ticked off black people. To top it all off they brought out the new Aunt May, Marisa Tomei, to play a lesbian hot for Cookie’s drawers. And that was all before the first commercial break. I mean... I just... can’t!

Then we switched into prison where Lucious is apparently enjoying himself. Nothing bad has happened, he looks like he’s eating good and he’s even watching TV, catching the concert given in his honor to get him out of jail. Yet, he still has all the venom and piss of a rich black man behind bars as evidenced by his meeting with a future black attorney general. Not distracted by her overwhelming cleavage, this negro went after her shoes. Cheap shoes? You really had to point out she had on some cheap shoes? That’s a low blow, bruh. Side note: You know those shoes was cheap as hell. They didn’t even show them, so you know she got her some of those two dollar Payless shoes, the same kind Star Jones used to lie and say she wore. She knew dang well she wasn’t wearin’ no Payless shoes, especially when she was heavy. Those shoes be exploded right off her feet the moment she stepped out of the store, leave her leaning sideways like Gumby’s head.

Meanwhile, as Jamal is trying to run Empire Records and his brother is preparing for his album release, Cookie has been secretly plotting to buy a majority stake in the company and lined up a secondary investor in Tomei’s character to fork over 250 million. Why they think Lucious won’t find out, I don’t know. Naturally the deal is undercut by Lucious who makes her a better offer to stay in charge of Empire, thwarting the hostile takeover. He’s still running everything from the inside. This fool should have gone to prison a long time ago.

Then, this business with Frank Gathers, the big dog, the feared one, the man that runs the streets... uh, Chris Rock? Wait, you mean Everybody Hates Chris grew into a gangster? OK. I thought it would be comical that he was supposed to be the big baddy, but you know what... Chris actually... really didn’t convince me I was wrong. Don’t get me wrong, he did a great job but I just couldn’t fear him, not that I can never see him as anything other than a comic, I just couldn’t see him as a non-whiny Pookie (New Jack City reference? Check.) On top of that, he was apparently supposed to be a cannibal. Yeah. Take that in for a minute. Any lip-licking and crazy-eyed stares weren’t just because he was mad, but because he was hungry. Last time I checked, the main thing other than real food that they eat in men’s prisons is—you know what? We don’t even have to go there. I’m sure you can figure it out.

With this fool sending Cookie people’s heads in boxes from prison, something had to be done and Lucious had to do it. And do it he did. After hearing old boy’s daughter rapping at a prison visit, he promised not only to sign her to Empire records but give her his magic stick too. Damn! Will he won’t. Won’t he will? Ha ha ha, I have no idea what the hell that even means, but it’s definitely some words they used tonight.
The Lyon he is, Lucious bothered not with cheap roaring words but beat the cannibal to the first bite, ordering him to be killed “loud... and long” in what had to be the prison cafeteria. Fare-thee-well Frank Gathers. We hardly knew ye.

The takeover failed and the family safe from harm, Jamal acted like a true don (read: new puppet of his father) when he kicked his entire family out of Lucious’ house and his mother gave him the two-slap for good measure. And to top it all off, Empire finally upgraded their Becky wig budget. Thank god, because those raggedy wigs they had been giving her looked like they were Miss Piggy rejects. We all need to hold on to our wigs, because this season looks to be an electrifying and exhilarating ride.

What did you think? Did Empire near wear you out with all the drama tonight? Will you still have enough left to get through Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder tomorrow? Are you still loving the cameos by every black star currently walking the face of the earth? Or do you find yourself already going through withdraws and it’s only been a few hours? Let me know what you think in the comments below. Hint: click where it reads “no comments” to comment.

P.S. OK, so that is not a perfect sign-off for every single post I do, but it works here. Man, has that light-skinned Betty’s hoe-ishness reached critical mass yet? But she can still walk around in all that white and pastel colors like she on her way to her virginal wedding night or a Memorial Day barbecue? Girl, stop.

Dees Niggas Here #Black-ish #PremiereWeek

Dees Niggas Here #Black-ish #PremiereWeek

 Pictures courtesy of ABC

OK, so this is a loaded post. Obviously just from reading the title some of you are probably offended or cringing or doing a whole gaggle of different things reacting to “THE Word” as it is called on tonight’s season premiere of Black-ish (#Black-ish, #DeesNiggas). Personally, I always thought THE Word was Jesus or the Bible or some form of that, as Christians tend to say it is. But apparently the N-word is THE Word that everyone wants to discuss. Let me explain.

First, let me start by saying that I truly don’t like talking or writing (especially in my novels) about race. I have a few written stories and screenplays I haven’t released that focus on the topic. However, I find that for any minority or non-minority continuing to focus on race is what can impede the forward march of more creative writing. Maybe one of the reasons we don’t see as many non-white characters in or leading sci-fi or fantasy books, films and TV is because so few minority writers want to write that stuff (we all know the other reason is because they aren’t given a chance or quality or a million other things). With that said, I continue.

ABC’s Black-ish makes its season premiere tonight at 9:30. Now, there are tons of things going on tonight sense it is premiere week. Seeing as how the networks want to destroy each other, Fox’s Empire will also be returning a half hour earlier (#Empire). So, in order to draw in those ratings and really get “black twitter” talking as was mentioned in an Essence.com interview with Anderson and Barris (one of the show’s creators), they have decided to go for the most click-baity topic they can by addressing the use of the word nigga.

To be fair, this is a topic discussed in Black households, families and communities of both affluent blacks as well as less upwardly-mobile Blacks. But the problem I have with this is that it is a commonly discussed topic. Everybody wants to talk about niggas and whether it’s OK to say it. Even Empire (its competition for the night) had its own controversial dust-up last season when Terrence Howard came out and said that he believed the word should be used on the show to bring authenticity to it. In fear of repeating myself as my book DARKER (#DARKER) has an epic nigga-rant that tries to look at the use of the word from all sides, I don’t want to delve too far into what people should and shouldn’t do and whether they should say it or not.

Why, then, am I a little ticked by this? Mainly because of the way it was advertised. The advertisements were so blatant and in your face with how we should essentially be excited for the use of the word and the crazy and hilarious shenanigans that will follow, it almost felt like they were selling niggas at a market. “Hey, we’re gonna use the word nigga. Some of you out there, especially you niggas (you know who you are *wink *) better get ready to tune in and talk about it, because we’re doin’ it for you.” What?

Look, don’t get me wrong, Black-ish is a nice family show that has its funny moments. Admittedly, I don’t watch it on a regular basis. But what ticks me off is not just the feel of the advertisements that this is somehow edgy when this is literally the oldest conversation that Blacks have been having in this country, but I am a little ticked at how well the marketers thought it’d work. And you know what, they might actually be right. Man, if I just think to mention that my horror novel DARKER uses the N-word in one tightly compact little area in the novel—though it is based off of Stephen King’s Carrie—I’m sure millions of people will flock to Amazon to purchase it just to see how I spell it: er or a -ending.

To sum it up, I’m not necessarily mad at the show for tackling the common conversation, I’m more mad that it is used so flippantly as a ploy to draw in more viewers. But hey, if it works (and we all know how often niggas used to work) so be it.

Note to first time readers: I tend not to use nearly as much cursing or bad words in my posts as I find them generally unnecessary. However, there are curses throughout most of my books. Also, I rarely get this inflammatory about a subject, so just consider that when viewing other posts.

What do you all think? Is the use of the topic justified? Will you be too busy watching Empire or something else to care? Or will you watch and have no effect on you? Let me know what you think in the comments below. Hint: click where it reads “no comments” to comment. I will close the comments after a few weeks or if they get out of hand.

P.S. OK, admittedly those were lyrics from a Public Enemy song. No, they weren’t aimed at the producers of the show or any specific people. You’re reading too much into this. Just because I sound angry and look angry, doesn’t mean I am angry!

Arnold Schwarzneggar is the new Trump, They canceled Under The Dome, NBC Cannibalized Hannibal and other Crazy stuff that happened this summer Season #SummerRoundUp

I’m back! For the... two or three of you readers out there, no, I haven’t died. Like most TV shows over the summer, I took a hiatus. Why, you ask? Many reasons. First, I had to get some work done. Pretty much the entire summer was eaten by the first season of The Writer (#TheWriter) out now, season finale this Friday.

That project took a lot out of me as I had forgotten how hard deadline writing can be. I had half the season done and suddenly, bam! A month and a half dissipated and I had only added three episodes. At one point, I even had to shut down my other social networking to finish. Thankfully, I had a good outline and a few scripts remaining from the original TV pitch. Again, if you haven’t checked it out, please do. It is slow-building, but I would say it is comparable to TV shows and books like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad.

I also was quite busy with my garden this summer and maybe I’ll get around to posting a few pics of my veg garden if I have time (currently I’m in the middle of the final edit of my comedy novel “Yep, I’m Totally Stalking My Ex-Boyfriend” due out in early October, #AhStalking). You’ll get to see all of my insect and furry friends that visited and pestered me in my garden.

Also, later on this year, I’ll be releasing my first full-on mystery novel The Knowledge of Fear (#KnowFear) about the annual slaying of three young girls in a small town in northern Ohio and the detective thrown into the melee of paranoia and danger. Currently re-tooling it as I initially sent it to publishers and they said it started too slow (you readers can be the judge of that).

And finally, I’ve made contact on the twittas. No, not alien contact but followers and cool people contact. One such contact I’ve made was with a friendly woman named S. M. Dahman. An author in her own right, (her first book Twisted Greens is out here: http://amzn.to/1YvAfG5 ) she just recently interviewed me for an author spotlight on her blog here: http://wp.me/p6D8TG-54  . As I don’t tend to blog too often about writing and rarely talk about myself because of my overwhelming humility, I would highly recommend you visit there if you are an aspiring writer or looking for good blogs and other ways to connect, and you currently want to know a little more about me.

Now, to the topic at hand. So much stuff happened this summer. The hottest recorded summer in history happened. There were fewer comic book movies this summer than we’ll ever see for the next five summers. AMC premiered a new spin-off show from the Walking Dead called Fear The Walking Dead. And... and... and... Oh, all the excitement is making me want to break into song with my own rendition of The Sound Of Music’s “Favorite Things.”
Republicans started their run for high office,

Astronaut’s Wives,

Then Wayward Pi-nes,

Both made good TV,
This was a recap of the season we had, in summer twen-tyyyy, fif-teeeennnn!

Woo! Good, right? And you kept up with the beat? What? You didn’t like the song? It was too short for you? Oh, so I didn’t cover enough events, huh? Now you’re gonna complain that I didn’t actually sing it, and that if I sung it and recorded it, then put it on here that would have made for a better blog post? Teh! You know, you people are so difficult to please some times. Sometimes, I wish I could just build some sorta structure to keep you less desired readers from reading my blog, but I don’t know how I would do that. Maybe I could get you to build it. It would be really tall, and long and it would be a... what’s the word I’m looking for? Right, a dome. It would be a dome.

Speaking of domes, CBS took theirs down, canceling Stephen King’s Under The Dome after three seasons. While I enjoyed the first two seasons (even though they veered from the book wildly) I can’t say I liked the third as much. Things got too crazy with the baby and Barbie acting all doting father. It just got weird.
James Patterson’s Zoo didn’t do much better, taking a good concept but never really doing much with it in my opinion. Those animals should have been eating more people. And what about the wolf guy? They set him up as this mysterious dude that knows stuff and then killed him off-screen, so you think his killer will be this big baddie, and then they kill him next commercial break! They had the big black guy whose been in everything lately and is the TV version of Michael Clarke Duncan, yet we never see him fighting a bear or some other massive animal—though I am behind two episodes.

I enjoyed Astronaut’s Wives Club for what it was as did I enjoy Wayward Pines which was right up M. Night’s alley, steeped in that creepy The Village vibe. At least this time they had real monsters.
Jurassic World was good but a box office bigger than the first? Whoa! Slow it down, world. Slow it down. Even with inflation and all that stuff, I didn’t think it was the all-time classic that the first one was. At least it was no Terminator Genisys which felt like it diminished the star quality of everyone involved, including Arnold. It makes me wonder how the hell he got the job for the next host of The Apprentice when Diddy and Russell Simmons were both available New York candidates and minorities, if the rumors about NBC were true.

A slew of movies came and went without a peep but Straight Outta Compton was a crazy little movie about Dre and Ice Cube, following the group called N**** With Attitude. It made a ton of money and is even being talked about for a sequel.

What’s not being talked about for a sequel is NBC’s Hannibal, another big cancellation of the season. They had finally caught up to Thomas Harris’ first book and covered the Red Dragon only to see the two Murder Husbands jump off a cliff together and old Bedelia jealous and stood up for dinner—or, I mean, not stood up. Sorry, that’s insensitive. I meant Hannibal always stayed a step ahead. No, that was a tasteless joke. I can’t seem to stop putting my foot in my mouth and—oh! I’ll just move on.

The weather has been a complete mess everywhere. It got up to 165 degrees in Iran, wildfires and dust storms swept across Cali and Arizona, and the crazies both here and abroad brought the violence and sadism.

Still, plenty of good stuff came from the summer. Serena got back with Drake (though, she promptly lost what would have been a history-making match), the Braxtons finally started working on an album together, Uptown Funk really gave it to us, and we finally cured the world of Iggy Azalea. So, as we head into the fall, we leave summer 2015 with a few lingering questions:

How long will this charade with Trump and the Republican party last? When will that Lexus hoverboard actually hit markets? Why does the Weeknd sound so much like Michael Jackson on certain songs and then nothing like him on others? When will Kanye West start preparations for his presidential run? What in the hell really are those? Was Girl on The Train that good of a book? And why in the hell won’t The View just die already?

Hopefully we’ll have these answers soon. Until then, as always, check out my books on Amazon (if you’re looking for Halloween scares check #AFuriousWind, #DARKER, #ThePowerOfTEN or #BrandNewHome). For those interested in something a little more dramatic, check out #TheWriter. The final episode of season one of The Writer is coming this Friday. All other 14 episodes are out now, available exclusively on Amazon. Join us on Goodreads to talk about books and TV. Subscribe to my blog and leave your comments below.
Until next time, “Jumpman, Jumpman, they gave me my own collection, woo!”

P.S. OK, I may have been listening to the new Drake and Future mixtape while typing this. Still working on my sign off! I’ll get it eventually.

NEW Novel: DARKER

#DARKER

OK, it has been a while people. I know, I've been slacking with my posts especially since there have been a lot of good books, movies and TV shows I want to talk about. My computer crashed on my off and on throughout these last two months making my workload twice as heavy because I had to keep re-booting each time. But I wanted to give you all two new posts today starting with my latest full novel DARKER.

Zariah Smith never thought much of herself. With her loathsomely dark skin, unruly kinky hair, and naivete about herself and the world around her, she has become the subject of ire for many of her different-skinned peers, a punching bag for their own sorrows. Thinking she might escape the shame her mother thrust upon her for being so tar-baby black, she goes to college, a place where youths find themselves and futures are discovered. But when the disdain for her color continues, she finds comfort within a most unexpected place: the darkness. Blessed (or cursed) with an unenviable power, it is within the darkness that she finds strength, and others face their darkest fears.

An exploration of modern-day race relations (though, it can be enjoyed by all readers), college hazing and coming-of-age when everyone around you is so unabashedly different, Michael Stephenson welcomes horror fans on a sometimes gruesome path to terror. A homage to Stephen King's first professionally published book Carrie, DARKER invites the reader to follow Zariah on her odyssey to assimilate in a world that seems only to fear what is different, fear what is misunderstood, fear the darkness.

With DARKER (#DARKER) I initially wrote the earliest draft of this book back in college. It didn't dawn on me until later that it shared some similarities with Stephen King's own work. Rather than try to change it drastically into something it didn't want to be, I stripped away certain elements and made it a straight homage. However, it stands on its own as it explores more so how we deal with our fears and desires in this increasingly complicated world. Yet another go into the horror genre, DARKER is filled with gruesome imagery of the product of our darkest fears. What if you couldn't escape your fears? What if you couldn't hide from your shame? What if... you couldn't avoid the darkness? The answers lie within Zariah Smith!

At a brisk 77,000 words (a quarter longer than King's original Carrie), purchase your digital copy of DARKER here:AMAZON. Get it this week for only #3.49.

As always, follow me on Goodreads, Tweet about the book #DARKER on Twitter, and join the Goodreads group. Until next time.
